Ambassador Stephen King hosted a reception in his residence to celebrate the achievements and development of Czech baseball. Young athletes, along with their families and friends, were the main guests at the event.
At the ceremony, the Ambassador and representatives of Czech baseball and University Sports Associations acknowledged the successes of the “under 12” team that placed 8th at the World Championship, and the “university” national team that lost to 0-8 to the USA in the semifinals of the 2017 Summer Universiade.
Before presenting the diplomas to the players, Ambassador King said: “As a life-long baseball player and fan who cheers for the Milwaukee Brewers, baseball is dear to my heart. In my few weeks here, I have learned how after World War I, an American YMCA coach taught baseball to students in Czechoslovakia. It is a great American sport that teaches us all the skills required to be great team players, to be leaders, and to bring positive change in not just our lives, but also in our communities.”
In commemoration of the centennial of U.S.-Czech relations in 2018, the U.S. Embassy is supporting several projects commemorating the strong athletic ties that exist between our two countries.
